China and the study of other cultures/countries
I'm intrigued by the subject of familiarising students with other cultures and countries. I went to school in another country and it is interesting to see how the perception of students is moulded by the curriculum. One example is the Year 1 students' study of China. Now, I'm not expecting an overly serious and in-depth study of Chinese political and social culture, but I was hoping for a little bit beyond dragons and fortune cookies! Yeah, I know that they're 5 and 6 year olds, but I think this goes throughout the education system in Britain (and, incidentally, where I was educated).
I do want my comments to be taken in context - I have said quite clearly that I am largely satisfied by my children's education. I know that there is plenty of their school career for students to really learn about China, but I wonder if this sort of study plants seeds.
